"Elyse?" Olive waved a hand in front of her face. "Hello? Earth to Elyse."
Elyse snapped out of her daze. She was still clutching the photo strip.
"Are you still with us?" Olive peered at the strip. "Oh, I see..."
With a yelp, Elyse folded the strip and stuffed it inside her back pocket.
"What happened between you and Aiden in that booth?" Olive was wide-eyed with curiosity. "Did he kiss you? Did you kiss him? Did you kiss each other?"
Elyse regarded her, aghast. "Nooo." Her laugh sounded too harsh, even to herself. "No." She shook her head. "Did weâof course we didn't. How ridiculous can you be?"
"Okay," Olive arched a brow at Lucie, "Just asking."
Lucie whispered into Olive's ear. "That's precisely why I didn't go into the booth. Talk about dirty."
"I heard that!" Elyse snapped.
"I didn't say anything," Lucie said.
Narrowing her eyes, Elyse scanned the small crowd waiting for the late night boat rides. Her attention zeroed in on Roger and Viola. They stood a shoulder's length apart. Viola's face was still a touch green from the Marmite biscuits. Roger's eyes were glued to his phone.
Elyse shook her head. Their lack of chemistry had proven sorely disappointing tonight. In fact, it should have been Roger and Viola kissing in the photo strip instead of â
And now she probably couldn't face Aiden again. Her cheeks steamed, recalling the soft pressure of his lips. Who was to blame for this? Roger. She was going to make this match work or else tonight would be for nothing.
"Viola," Elyse said, as the paddleboat drifted toward them, "why don't you ride with Roger?"
Viola clutched her stomach. "I don't thinkâ"
"Viola doesn't look like she's in any condition to get on a boat," Roger said, linking arms with Elyse and ushering her to the edge of the dock. "Why don't you ride with me?"
This hard-to-get dance again! Why did Roger persist in making her matchmaking endeavors so difficult? She got that he was going slow out of respect for Viola's delicacy but this snail-like pace was wearing on her patience.
"Actually," she spun on her heels and grabbed Viola's hand, "Viola was just telling me that she'd love to hear all about your didgeridoo."
Roger glanced at Viola, frowning. "That's nice, but I think it takes a special person to appreciateâ"
Elyse held up her hand. "Stop right there. Viola is that special person and has three hours to kill, so..." and with a flutter of her hand, she shooed them toward the boat.
"Um," Viola's shoulders knocked into Rogers. "Elyse?"
"What? What is it now?"
"I think I'll sit this one out. I'm not feeling very well." A sheen of perspiration coated Viola's forehead. She furrowed her brows and gulped. "I think it's the marmite."
"My marmite?" Roger did a double take, sounding as affronted as if he were the inventor of marmite. "I've never heard of anyone getting sick over a little marâ"
As if to prove her point, Viola doubled over. A stream of savory-smelling, tar-colored vomit splattered the dock.
"Whoa!" Everyone jumped back.
"Easy there, little Sheila," Roger said, thumping Viola on the back.
